Hunting changes

Representatives from the Colorado Division of Wildlife will host meetings in May, including one in Greeley, to discuss proposed changes to waterfowl hunting in northeast Colorado.

One of the proposals is to ban duck hunting entirely in certan areas, including the Greeley area.

Potential regulation changes will be discussed for the following State Wildlife areas: Jackson Lake, Jean K. Tool, Brush, Atwood, Overland Trail, Bravo and Red Lion. Potential regulation changes to allow waterfowl hunting from boats will be discussed for Jackson and Jumbo reservoirs.

Meeting times:

* May 19 -- Morgan Community College, Bloedorn Lecture Hall, 820 Barlow Rd., Fort Morgan.

* May 20 -- Hilton Fort Collins, 317 W. Prospect Rd., Fort Collins.

* May 21 -- Greeley Guest House, 5401 9th St., Greeley.

All meetings will take place from 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Mosquito control

The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment has more than 100 bat houses to give away to Weld County residents as a way to decrease the number of mosquitoes that carry the West Nile virus.

The bat houses were built and donated by Boy Scout Troop 606 of the Longs Peak Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Rex Morgan of rural Weld County led the community service project to complete his Eagle Scout badge.

The bat houses are 2 feet long and 13 inches wide and are designed to hang on poles, barns and trees. Information on how and where to place the bat houses will be provided.

Many of the bats can eat up to 2,000 mosquito-sized insects in one night.

Pelican Fest registration

Registration for the Pelican Fest Triathlon will take place at 7 a.m. May 24.

The race starts an hour later.

The race is open to teams or individuals and feature sprint distances, meaning it will have a half-kilometer swim, a 20-km bike ride and a 5K run.

Fees are $15 before May 15, $65 until May 23 and $75 the day of the race.
