Greeley: The best of both worlds

Hybrids are in these days. In a sense, that's true for Greeley, too. While the city doesn't have much in common with the cars that have become the rage in a more environmentally conscious society, it does share one trait with those automobiles.

"Greeley will always be a hybrid," said Becky Safarik, Greeley's community development director. This insight captures Greeley well. The city will always have one foot in its agrarian roots and another in an urban future. This is a good thing for the city and something we all should embrace. Greeley's strong connection with agriculture means a lot. So does the city's willingness and ability to grow.

While urban interests and agriculture don't always make the easiest partners, they can work together. The hybrid nature of Greeley and Weld County makes the area stronger. As an example, one reason many economists say northern Colorado will likely handle the current economic slowdown well is because of the region's agricultural base. The agricultural economy tends to be strong when the rest of the economy slows.

Also, by continuing to support policies that facilitate growth, the city will gain the benefits that come with a vibrant urban area. While growth is complex and can come with a downside, Greeley's willingness to embrace its emerging role as an urban center is important.

Greeley, and the rest of Weld County will continue to grow, even in an economic slowdown. This growth is generally good for the area. It brings jobs and improves the quality of life with things like fancy restaurants and shops, as well as improved cultural activities.

It is important, however, that when we grow, we do so in a responsible way and that we respect our agricultural roots. This is not an easy task, but experiencing the benefits of a strong agricultural base, while continuing to grow are part of what makes Greeley a good place to be.

We hope Greeley, politically and socially, will continue to embrace both its agricultural past and its urban future. We are lucky to have the best of both worlds.
