The Windsor High School boys golf team finished sixth with a team score of 339 at its only home match of the season at Pelican Lakes on Thursday.

Sophomore Taylor Humbert, the Wizards’ No. 1 golfer, led the Wizards with a round of 77 in the Class 4A Northern Conference match.

Humbert, 15, bogeyed No. 9 to score a 36 on the front nine, and finished 5-over-par on the back nine to close out his round. Humbert started out with drops on Nos. 11, 12 and 14 after he hit into the water, but regained his composure to close out at even par.

At the turn, the golfers dealt with a bit of high winds to make things more difficult.

“I didn’t hit my driver well,” Humbert said. “The wind was a factor.”

Fellow sophomore Jake Fitzgerald, the team’s No. 2 golfer, struggled as he carded an 88.

Fitzgerald, 15, said he was extremely nervous because he was playing at his home course. He also had trouble on the putting green as he fought to sink his putts. Fitzgerald said he needs to get to Denver to get help with his swing from his golf coach.

“I’m just going to throw this one out and not even think about it,” Fitzgerald said.
Head coach Jeff Herring figured his team would have some sort of home-course advantage, but it didn’t happen.

He said the team had high expectations, but once things started to go wrong everything snowballed. He also said the hard part about golf is the mental aspect of the game.

Herring said the team needs to work on the little things like course management and working on the putting green.

“I don’t want to change their swing because they’ll get worse before they get better,” Herring said.

The Wizards had a rough day all around as senior Nick Janssen shot an 83 and junior Chris Ullum carded a 91.

The bright spot for the Wizards was that Humbert finished in the top five for the match, as Greeley Central placed first.
